Girl, Do Your Hair
So. This is a personal opinion and I'm sure it will sound a little judgey but it's meant to be helpful. I've been a stay at home mom for a long time now and I've noticed some days are better than others. It helps when it's sunny outside and I've gotten a good night's rest. I have lots of ideas and energy for the day. Those aren't usually things that are in my control (assuming we're actually going to bed when we should), but there are some things that I've noticed through the years make a difference in how much I accomplish and how my day looks.
So at the risk of sounding like John Tesh, I'm just gonna say it.
If you want to get stuff done while you're spending all day at home, there is one simple tip that will help. Get dressed. You might have heard this before because it's recommended in a lot of realms, like fighting depression and working from home, etc. But it's true. Don't just change from one pair of lounge pants to another. Put on clothes like you're going to see someone. Because if you have kids in the house, you are seeing people. And they'll take you more seriously if you're dressed like someone who means business. It's hard to take an adult in fleece batman pants very seriously. You'll also take yourself more seriously. I don't know, maybe it's just the effort of getting dressed makes you feel like you require payback. Maybe it signals to your mind that it's day time and not almost bed time. I don't know why it works, but it does.
Also, put shoes on. I don't know, it's just helpful.
Lastly, do your hair. It doesn't sound like a big deal but it helps. Where goes the hair, there goes the day. Good days seem to have a pattern to them so find out what it is.
The other part of a good day I've discovered is actually being up (or awake) before the morning rush and being able to take some time to pray. I never --repeat NEVER-- end up making a full Bible study/devotion time happen in the morning. No matter what intentions I have, it just doesn't happen. But taking a few minutes before I get up to just acknowledge God in my life, to recognize that He's present and can help me through the day, that's becoming an essential part of my life. I used to think it didn't really count if I couldn't read my Bible too, but it does count and it sets the day off in a different direction when I take a minute to turn my heart toward Him.
What other rhythms help your day go smoothly? Feel free to share them with me.
